Unexpected Guests

It had been a week since she’d walked Noreen through the house. Sammy hadn’t been sleeping well, and she was starting to think her work was suffering. She was tired all the time, and her cakes and cookies didn’t seem quite as good as they used to.

“You’re dead on your feet,” Kate pointed out. “You need to find some way to relax.”

“I don’t think I can. I’m obsessed,” Sammy admitted, swiping a strand of her curly blonde hair behind her ear as she headed into the kitchen. “I want this so desperately, but I’m really torn. If the house needs to be put on the preservation list, then that can only be a good thing for the town. Of course, it also means I have to find some other place to put the shelter.”

“Don’t get yourself down. Even if you can’t use this house, you could always have someone else give you a bid on putting up a building. Like one of those metal pole barns. Those are pretty cheap.”

“I’ve looked into those, actually,” Sammy admitted. “I told Rob about it, and he said they’re not allowed within city limits. A shelter in the middle of the country won’t do those folks any good.”

Kate snapped her fingers in disappointment. “I hadn’t thought of that.”

“In a way, I’m kind of glad. A metal building has the potential for being cheaper, but it doesn’t look as homey. I know they’ll just be glad to have a roof over their heads no matter what it looks like, but I think the idea of something a little cozier is nice. It’s like they’re staying at a friend’s house instead of just being put up in some sort of barracks.”

Kate smiled. “That’s exactly why you’re the perfect person for the job. Now go home and get some rest before all your enthusiasm kills you.”

“Actually, I’m going to stay here for a bit. I promised Helen I’d get ahead on the breakfast baking, so I’ve got a lot of cinnamon rolls and biscuits to make. We should have quite a demand for them over the weekend.” The patrons who came in too late on the previous weekend had experienced the disappointment of finding out Just Like Grandma’s was fresh out of their favorites.

“Then let me stay and help you.” Kate had just finished untying her apron, but she wrapped the strings back around her waist.

“You don’t have to do that,” Sammy countered. “You’ve had to make up enough time for all my absences from work. I’ve got to be a responsible adult here. Just because there are other things I want to do doesn’t mean I don’t have to keep up with my obligations.”

“Many hands make light work,” Kate insisted as she tightened the bow behind her back. “Besides, my Aunt Georgia is in town and I’d love an excuse not to go have yet another dinner with her and my mother. All I’ll hear about is how I’m not married yet. Just tell me what to do.
